Awesome extreme sports in Cornwall

Simon L 14 January 2018

Cornwall is well-renowned as a tranquil holiday location, offering a wonderfully diverse mix of stunning coastal and countryside locations. However, it has also garnered a reputation as one of the most thrilling areas of the UK to visit due to the wide range of outdoor pursuits and adventure activities available throughout the county. For adrenaline junkies, here is our run-down of the best extreme sports in Cornwall for you to test your nerve with!

Shark Cage Diving

Although difficult to believe, the ocean around the Cornish coastline is a haven for blue sharks and basking sharks. With companies such as Newquay Sea Safaris, who operate out of the North Cornwall town, you are able to get up close and personal with these majestic and inquisitive creatures during an eight-hour cage diving trip where you'll learn more about the conservation of them. Shark cage diving trips are only available during June, July and August, however, some dates may be available as a private charter.

Wild Swimming

There are many hidden coves and pools throughout the county which are all fantastic places to enjoy wild swimming in Cornwall and the health benefits are remarkable! One of our favourite places for wild swimming in Cornwall is Goldiggins Quarry on Bodmin as you can really enjoy a peaceful location, most of the time in solitude! Fed by a spring on the Moor and surrounded by grassy banks, the water here is deep meaning those looking for excitement can dive into the water from the high banks and boulders.

Coasteering

One of the best ways to get a unique perspective on the Cornish coastline and enjoy an adrenaline-fuelled excursion is to embark on a coasteering trip. Cornish Rock Tors is based in Polzeath, North Cornwall and offer a wide range of coasteering trips encompassing all ages and abilities with trained instructors and the latest equipment. Abseiling

Abseiling is becoming increasingly popular in Cornwall, particularly due to the naturally craggy coastline offering a wide selection of perfect locations. BF Adventure near Falmouth offers safe and exhilarating experiences where you are able to get a bird's eye view of your surroundings at the adventure quarry. Half day and full day sessions are available as well as accessible abseils for wheelchair users. For those who thrive on the adrenaline rush, take part in the Abseil down the Maritime Museum Tower in Falmouth which is a 95ft free fall in aid of charity.

Surfing

Surfing

A sport that is synonymous with the county, you are able to experience this popular activity in the home of UK surfing with the Quicksilver Surf School in Newquay. Fully qualified instructors will guide you from surfing newbie to confident wave-rider in no time at all through informative and experienced tuition. For competent surfers, hire equipment and hit the waves across the county's wide range of beaches.

Blokarting

Think of a Blokart as a mini land yacht; fast, fun, safe and surprisingly easy to learn. Blokarting is a great activity for most ages and abilities and can take place at a number of locations but you will mainly see them winding along the sandy beaches of Cornwall. Speedsail UK based near Penzance offer taster sessions too.
