Polperro is a charming little town in the south eastern side of West Cornwall. Just a few miles along the coast from Looe, it was once home to smugglers and pirates, but is now frequented by friendly locals and curious holidaymakers. Polperro holidays take you back in time with a pretty mix of different sized whitewashed cottages in a town that is definitely worth a visit during any holiday in Cornwall. Formerly an extremely busy fishing port, Polperro’s main industry is now tourism and many people only have to visit once before they fall in love with this charismatic and picture perfect town.
No cars are allowed within one mile of the harbour meaning that visitors and locals are left to wander freely through the narrow streets that house a huge selection of fine restaurants all serving local produce that has been caught by the fishermen in the port. A traditional horse and carriage can be caught to help you ride through the village as you explore the local craftsmen’s shops and wander down to the picturesque harbour.
Treks along the South West Coast Path offer up some beautiful views over the water and to St George’s Island. If you want to be on the water itself, take a boat trip to explore the many hidden caves and coves dotted around the bay. Polperro also has a secluded sea pool located on one side of Chapel Rock, which is accessible from half tide and can be reached by steep steps cut into the cliff side. Chapel Pool was built in the 1940’s and has been popular with holidaymakers ever since but its little wonder given the fantastic views and surrounding scenery.
Nearby, you will also find a wealth of pretty towns and villages, such as Looe, which has its own beach and Banjo Pier. You’ll also find further gift shops, which are perfect for picking up a holiday souvenir such as a Cornish pixie, or a traditional meat pasty which you can indulge in while sat beside the harbour.
If you’re looking to stay in Polperro during June, then why not coincide your holiday with the Polperro Festival, which has been running for almost twenty years. You’ll find street entertainment, live music and plenty to do for younger children and it really brings to life the community spirit of this lovely town.
