10 of the best Christmas events in Cornwall this year

Harbourside villages illuminated in sparkling light, food festivals allowing a chance to sample some of the best food and drink around, and huge events at the region's biggest family attractions – there are plenty of Christmas events in Cornwall this year!

Cornwall is a magical place all year round, but its Christmas events are always the icing on the year-shaped cake, with magical moments in every nook and cranny of the county.

Here are 10 highlights to look forward to this year:

Padstow Christmas Festival

Padstow Christmas Festival

What is it? The popular festival has become a must-visit on the Cornish Christmas calendar, bringing around 30,000 visitors to the fishing port every year. Expect to see demonstrations from celebrity chefs including Michael Caines, Angela Hartnett and Rick Stein, along with other culinary delights. The town's lights will also be up from late November, meaning you'll be seeing Padstow in all its festive glory!

When is it? 7th to 10th December.

Fowey Christmas Market

What is it? One of Cornwall's best-loved markets hosts a weekend of festive entertainment, with hand-picked traders including some of the best local food and drink producers. It's a great time to start your Christmas shopping too, as a range of boutique shops and arts and crafts creators will offer plenty of gift inspiration throughout the town.

When is it? 24th to 26th November.

Christmas lights in Mousehole

What are they? Simply put, the tiny village's Christmas lights display is Cornwall's best! They have become legendary over their 54 years, with more than 7,000 sparkling illuminations lighting up the harbour. There's a theme, and sea serpents, whales and fishing boats will all be twinkling by (and in!) the water. What's even more alluring about it, is that it's all thanks to volunteers and donations – meaning the switch-on event is a real community affair.

When are they? From 16th December to 6th January 2018.

Jungle All The Way at Newquay Zoo

What is it? There will be plenty of Christmas cheer at Newquay Zoo in December. Characters including Belle and Rapunzel will be meeting and greeting their fans, there will be live music from Newquay Band and others, while Father Christmas himself will read some Christmas classics. There's also a special candy cane trail which, if completed, allows some special prizes!

When is it? 16th and 17th December.

Christmas at the Eden Project

What is it? The Eden Project's Festival of Light and Sound returns this year, alongside opportunities to meet Father Christmas and to go ice skating. Santa's Grotto is definitely one to enjoy, with an opportunity to see “behind the scenes” – including elves' beds and stockings ready for Christmas Day. You'll then settle down next to the fireplace for a story read by the man himself, ensuring you leave with some very special memories.

When is it? Santa's Grotto: November 25th to December 24th. Ice skating: until 18th February. Festival of Light and Sound: 25th November to 30th December.

Bah Humbug! A Christmas Carol in Falmouth

What is it? This re-telling of the classic Charles Dickens tale will be told by the very talented cast and crew of Miracle Theatre at Falmouth's Princess Pavilion. Expect to be taken on a spellbinding journey through Ebeneezer Scrooge's life as he's made to confront the ghosts of his past, his present and his future.

When is it? 14th to 31st December.

Sleeping Beauty at the Hall For Cornwall in Truro

What is it? Stand-up comedian Edward ‘Kernow King' Rowe and Harry Potter actor Granville Saxton return in the Hall For Cornwall's 2017 Christmas show Sleeping Beauty. Following on from Dick Whittington and Jack and the Beanstalk, the Hall For Cornwall in Truro presents the third and final chapter in its trilogy of Christmas adventures.

When is it? 5th to 31st December.

Cornwall Macmillan Christmas Fair at the Eden Project

What is it? One of Cornwall's most vibrant Christmas Fairs returns to the Eden Project in November, offering an early chance to start your gift-buying while raising vital funds for Cornwall's cancer patients. Last year's fair raised a whopping £57,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, with stallholders donating 15% of their takings to the charity.

When is it? 15th and 16th November.

Christmas at Trerice

What is it? Trerice House, a National Trust property near Newquay, goes back in time to the Tudor period this winter, with banquets and a Tudor Father Christmas on weekends until 17th December. There will also be four festive banquets where revellers can enjoy a Tudor-inspired four-course feast and entertainment, allowing an insight into Christmas back in 1573.

When is it? 24th November 2017 to 17th December. Banquets on 24th November, 2nd, 8th and 15th December.

The Winter Gift Fayre in Truro

What is it? This new-for-2017 Christmas market promises a wonderful selection of arts, crafts, jewellery, food, drink and more. Held at the Piazza on Truro's Lemon Quay, the event is aiming to become a staple in Cornwall's Christmas events calendar, with a traditional feel – evergreen trees, natural wood and warm light – encapsulating the Christmas spirit.

When is it? 12th to 17th December.
