The Lizard is one of the most secluded and ruggedly beautiful places in the South West and is an amazing location for holidays in Cornwall, particularly if you want some inspiration and peace of mind. The abundance of small coves and bays give visitors a great chance to explore many seemingly untouched areas of this spectacular landscape in West Cornwall.
Close by is the small harbour of Porthleven that provides locally sourced produce for many of the restaurants and pubs on the peninsula. From the modest fishing village of Cadgwith you can explore the bay by fishing vessel and with plenty of amazing coastal paths there are remarkable views for walkers to enjoy. The beach at Porthleven is also considered one of the finest surfing locations in the whole of the UK.
Much of the area is designated as a Natural Nature Reserve and is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The clear waters that surround the bay are home to some very rare creatures and wildlife; the Manacles is a razor reef which is ideal for diving where you can meet the creatures of these waters around the shipwrecks off the coast. The geology of the area is also extremely unique and would be hard to find anywhere else in the world; look out for the serpentinite rock on your stay.
The town often referred to as the “Gateway to The Lizard” is Helston, which is steeped in rich history with many traditional celebrations taking place throughout the year. It is also a great place to head for an exciting family day out on the Lizard with Flambards theme park being located in the town. Here you can enjoy exhibitions and rides making it a great place to visit for all weather fun. Another fantastic place to visit while on a family holiday in Cornwall is the Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek where you can see seals being nursed to full health amongst other animals being cared for by the sanctuary.
