Wildlife watching in Cornwall

With miles upon miles of unspoilt coastline and range of diverse habitats, Cornwall is one of the best places in the British Isles to see marine mammals, sharks and seabirds from the land and sea. But with dozens of places around Cornwall’s coast where you can spot wildlife in action, where are the best locations to get up close and personal with the giants from the deep, or the best time of year to go birdwatching or seal spotting?

A local’s guide to St Ives

St Ives in West Cornwall is a beautiful cultural hub that draws artists and families alike to its sandy shores. The famous Tate Gallery sits in the centre and is surrounded by cafes and eateries sit behind the beaches.

A beautiful town

While there is no denying that St Ives is naturally beautiful, defining what a traditional Cornish seaside town should be like, the town has grown into so much more than that, becoming a renowned holiday destination; Tate St Ives has been one of the main reasons for this. One of only two Tate galleries outside of London, it kickstarted the now buzzing art scene within the town, and its recent expansion reaffirms the town's status as the art capital of Cornwall.

That being said, people still flock to this town for its sheer beauty. On a sunny day, there are few better spots to be in the South West, with the crystal clear waters lapping up onto the sandy beach, local sailing boats bobbing in the harbour, and glorious views across the sea. The great quality of restaurants throughout the town, along with the surf at Porthminster beach, make this a fantastic holiday destination.
